School: International School of Brussels
Accrediting Agency: Council of International Schools and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools
The International School of Brussels was established in 1951 and today has 1400 students, aged 2½ to 18, from more than 65 countries. ISB is situated on a forty-acre wooded campus in a peaceful area of Brussels, about nine kilometres from the centre of the city.
Our curriculum incorporates international standards of excellence and provides a structure within which each child can flourish, grow in understanding and move confidently move on to higher education and a career. We are four schools in one: Early Childhood Centre, Elementary School, Middle School and High School. At each level the curriculum is delivered by highly-trained and dedicated teachers, supported by leading edge technology.
The student : teacher ratio is less than 10:1. Ninety-five percent of ISB graduates continue to higher education in universities and colleges across the world. We offer comprehensive English as a Second Language support to our students for whom English is not their first language. Likewise, for students with learning difficulties, we have developed a model learning support programme, catering for those with mild to severe learning disabilities.
Sport and the fine and performing arts play a major part in school life. ISB has one of the largest competitive sports programmes in Europe and is also committed to the concept of ‘sport for all’, offering a wide range of sporting activities during and after school. Our 350-seat theatre and smaller studio space give students many opportunities to demonstrate their dramatic and musical abilities. Our lifelong learning programme offers an excellent range of learning and leisure activities for adults.
To measure our success, we use the International Schools Assessment programme, comparing our students’ achievements to those in other high-performing international schools. We are accredited by the Council of International Schools and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools
Brussels is the capital of Belgium and one of the three regions that make up the country of approximately ten million people. The other two regions are Flanders and Wallonia. Dutch, French and German are the three official languages.
The city is also the home of the European Commission and NATO, and many of the large corporations site their European Headquarters here. It is officially a bilingual city - French and Dutch - although English is also spoken widely.
Brussels is a fascinating city to explore, particularly the Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture, and a great place for fine cuisine. The city is also a short journey away from many of the major European capitals - Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Berlin.
