Opened in 1923, the high school was built with monies left by Judge John Handley of Scranton, PA. Today the Handley Trust continues to provide annual funding for instructional programs of the Winchester Public Schools. Handley High School, home of 1200 “Judges”, is a 4 year comprehensive high school offering college prep, tech prep, AP, and dual credit courses, ESL and Governor’s School programs. “Handley Pride” represents heritage, traditions, and accomplishments in academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activities. In 1998 the high school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, Handley is undergoing a 63.9 million dollar renovation. Town/City: Winchester, VA Town/City Description: Winchester, Virginia, population 26,000, is an independent city located in the Shenandoah Valley 65 miles northwest of Washington, DC. Winchester lays claim that it is the oldest city west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area is steeped in history and is a haven for history buffs. The city was a key strategic point during the Civil War and is said to have changed hands as many as 72 times, and 13 times in one day. Winchester is the location for the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival which draws 250,000 visitors to the area each May. It is also home of Shenandoah University, the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, and the Winchester Medical Center, rated one of the top 100 best hospitals in the US.
